“Ocean 2” – A sculptural reflection by Michael Wegerer

Michael Wegerer’s new spatial installation “Ocean 2” reflects his work “Ocean – the better life”. It is a walk-in, expansive collage of media images. Based on his oeuvre of printed collages, Wegerer uses an extensive data archive of images and fragments from the current daily press to create large-format visual landscapes. This installation invites us to re-evaluate the everyday flood of visual information and discover hidden layers of meaning in seemingly familiar objects and images.

Wegerer is known for his concepts that adapt public spaces and found objects. He challenges us to break through the surface of outward appearance and recognise a deeper, often overlooked reality. The sculptural work is characterised by clear lines and structured surfaces, screen prints on plasterboard form a walk-in assemblage. In a dialogue between proximity and distance, the installation unfolds a multi-layered network of associations and levels of interpretation.

The installation is located in the exhibition hall, while a temporary wall assemblage is presented in the abandoned Flederhaus in Vienna’s Seestadt district. Wegerer’s work was curated by Katerina Dimitrova for the group exhibition “Proximity and Distance”, which offers an open space for interpretation and invites the visitor to reflect on the relationship between the individual and the overwhelming mass of visual data of our time.
